The Origin Story from our Creative Director, Sherry Holub…

The year was 1995 …

Back in 1995, I’d just graduated from UCLA School of Art. I had a passion for visual storytelling through photography and had also been doing freelance graphic design. But rather than try for a job at an agency, I decided to build something of my own. So from the very inception, I had a commitment to crafting unique solutions from the ground up.

My first web design client, the incredible vocal coach Lis Lewis, came as a referral from a friend. I dove right in, learned HTML in a couple of weeks, and that dedication to client success has been a cornerstone ever since. Cool fact: Lis remains a client to this day (I’m not kidding when I mention we have crazy client retention)!

Diving right in and doing business with real clients and real projects gave me the type of experience you just can’t get from school.

It didn’t take me long to realize that being creative and making something look great doesn’t automatically get results for clients.

But I quickly learned that beautiful design alone wasn’t enough. The crucial pieces I discovered were…

Design needs to have a purpose.

Who is the audience? What are the goals of the project? What action should the design be facilitating in the audience? After combining marketing principles with design, things clicked and clients started to see the benefits.

As the technology evolved, so did we.

In 2007, seeking a better work-life balance, I left the hustle and bustle of Southern California and made a move to Southern Oregon.

Shortly after that, I made the decision to shorten the name to JVM Design (but many clients still know us JV Media Design). I’ve also brought in a few key partners to expand the services we offer, making us more of a “one-stop-shop” without compromising our bandwidth or watering down our team’s expertise.

I truly believe in going the extra mile for folks, but I also encourage everyone (including my clients) that every day doesn’t have to be a grind. We all need rest and downtime to do our best and give our all.

That could be one of the main reasons why it’s now somehow thirty years since I made that decision to form this company and I’m not only still here, but still loving what I do and every business and non-profit who I get to help.

Sherry Holub

Ever since I won a Halloween poster contest at the age of 8 with black crayon shavings and cotton balls, everyone knew I was destined to use my creative brain in a career capacity. A self-proclaimed introvert with the ability to make things happen, I now have a ton (like almost 30 years worth) of experience helping businesses get real results with handcrafted design and personalized service. I’m an advocate for education, a member of prestigious design organizations, won awards, written articles, and been invited to judge design competitions such as the Webbys. In addition to art and design, I have a heavy background in photography and love writing.

I’m also a friend to all cats and rabbits, love the paranormal, and originally wanted to be an archaeologist. When not working, you’ll find me getting outdoors, coming up with new recipes, taking trips in my teardrop trailer (“The Gnome Home”), practicing Qi Gong, hitting the gym, snowboarding, keeping my cats entertained, driving around in a sweet 1970 Camaro and generally trying to live my best life.

Jeffrey Smith

Jeffrey keeps things organized and on-task at JVM. He provides decades of insight, experience and wisdom as well as a keen attention to detail.

A loose cannon by right of descent, Jeffrey brings a unique perspective to everything he does. He’s been writing for over thirty years and describes his interests as, “too confounded many for a well-ordered life.”

When not keeping order in the JVM office, Jeffrey can be found researching things like Medieval and ancient history, the paranormal, architecture, and folklore.

WordPress Programming and Code Wrangler:
Jane Gilpatric

Jane is one of those rare individuals who not only designs great websites, but codes them as well. Jane creates rock solid, effective website designs and then builds them with handcrafted, quality code … in fact she lives for coding and solving problems! Jane has over 17 years experience designing and developing websites and over 10 years experience with WordPress.

When not working on websites you’re likely to find her keeping up with the latest science and technology news, walking her dog Loki, reading a good book, or spending time with her kids.
